Bottom Pot

The Everyday People Series.

Ever heard the popular Nigerian adage “na bottom pot dey sweet pass.” meaning the food at the bottom of the pot tastes better.

This is particularly true when large portions are cooked making it difficult to stir thoroughly and leads to some of the spices settling at the bottom as the food cooks.

Popular delicacies like jollof rice, bean porridge and yam porridge are believed to taste better when burnt. Loud scrapings of aluminium pots are common sounds in many neighbourhoods.

Here, we see Nkechi who patiently waited for the rest of her family to take their share of food. Now she happily has the pot with the bottom burnt jollof rice to herself.
