Our creative storytelling group continues to meet every week to share stories and keep each other inspired. We’re a quirky group of writers, illustrators and filmmakers who enjoy dabbling mostly in speculative fiction—infusing myths, transmutations, taboos, fables, and folklore into everyday realities. It allows us challenge social norms and spark conversations about those many things that tend to unite or divide us. Here are some of the stories we’ve been working on…

The Hunter
Chinelo Jeni Enemuo
The Hunter is one in seventeen young adult fiction stories in the African Anthology "Waterbirds on the Lakeshore" edited by Zukiswa Wanner, and published by Ouida Books, in collaboration with the Goethe Institut.
Chinelo's "The Hunter" is a thrilling fictional piece inspired by the infamous pre-colonial Igbo tradition of condemning outcasts, criminals, and the allegedly cursed/possessed to a distant place called the 'Evil Forest'.
Set in contemporary times, the story follows Nedu in his early days at a boarding school built on the site of the legendary Evil Forest. As he settles in, he starts to notice strange occurrences and soon uncovers a chilling truth about his family's history. They were once part of a secret society sworn to protect the school from the restless undead that still linger.

Koal
Kene Ibeneme
This story celebrates Enugu, the Coal City of southeastern Nigeria, known for its vast coal reserves.
Afam, the son of Dike inherits a crimson moon amulet that symbolises his family’s bond with the Igbo deity, Ala (the earth goddess). After Dike is betrayed and murdered, Afam is buried alive in the mines, his fate sealed beneath the earth.
Fifty years later, Bayo, a mining supervisor, unearths a mysterious stone deep within the mines. When the amulet shatters it, Afam emerges—still 12 years old. Bayo takes him in, but Afam’s supernatural transformation soon disrupts their bond. His body takes on the properties of coal, and as he uncovers his powers, Afam becomes consumed by a desire to avenge his father’s death.
His quest for revenge is interrupted by Ala herself, who calls upon him to serve as her champion in a divine feud among the gods. This conflict transforms him into "Koal," a figure torn between the pull of vengeance and the weight of his divine destiny.

Essence and Influence

Integrating Essence and Influence in Legitimizing Worlds: An Artist Reflects—published in "Of Worlds and Artworks" by Brill and University of Bayreuth, Germany.
Chinelo's paper is an illustrated narrative essay exploring the tension between Essence (heritage shaped by geographical and cultural roots) and Influence (foreign concepts beyond one’s cultural context) in shaping perspectives.
Through reflective storytelling, the paper examines how contemporary African art embodies 'Essence' while contributing to global Influences, the rise of New Media and its tendency to prioritise 'Influence' over 'Essence' among emerging African artists, and the challenge of balancing the two to create art that resonates locally and sparks global discourse.
By recognising art as a universal language, the paper highlights its role in exploring and reimagining real-world concepts and experiences.

In Igbo culture, pythons are revered by some as bearers of ancestral spirits and symbols of goodwill. In some villages today, they remain sacred, and killing one requires giving it a burial as if it were human.
But what happens when a baby is discovered next to the ruptured belly of a dead python? The native priest demands the child for sacrifice, calling it a divine retribution. The Christian priest sees a saviour who has slain evil incarnate and claims the child for the church.
The reader, however, knows more: this baby was a shoddily aborted five-month-old foetus, discarded improperly with bio-waste, in a dump close to a python's hole.
What follows is a gripping collision of tradition, religion, and science. Is the child a result of a weird chemical reaction—or divine intervention?
As the child grows, her mysterious reptilian powers make her both feared and hunted. Caught between a re-emerged parent, a society that shuns her, a vengeful community, and those who seek to exploit her abilities, she fights to uncover her identity. This is a thrilling tale of survival, self-discovery, and resilience—an electrifying journey through the depths of taboo, faith, and the extraordinary.
